Barbecue meats
What kind of meat can you barbecue? Any meat you want! Remember the two things that make barbecue:
1. Slow cooking
2. Low heat (roughly 200-225 degrees F)
Although the early days of colonial America saw mostly BBQ pork, the varieties of meat that have been
bbq'ed through time has no limit. Buffalo was probably cooked barbecue style by the Native Americans. Today you can find buffalo on a few menus in the north western states.
Barbecued alligator is a common place in some areas of Florida. On the west coast you will see an abundance of barbecued seafood, as you do in the northeastern states where the fishing industry is a key part of the economy.
Beef is a common place in the Midwest and Texas. You will also find barbecued game hen, turkey, and chicken which covers the Americanized poultry family.
Throughout different parts of the world, you will find a greater range of barbecued meat.
In Australia, for example, you are likely to find barbecued kangaroo and wild boar.
In summary, basically any type of animal may be barbecued... I have even heard of people
barbecuing racoon! Whatever your taste desires!! |
